Why Drinking Enough Water Is A Vital Part Of Your Weight Management

One of the most important elements of any weight loss program is water.
Research suggests that as many as three out of every four people are seriously dehydrated. This is important from a weight loss viewpoint because the body sends a message to the brain when it is thirsty and that signal is very similar to the signal that asks for food, with the result that most people eat when all they require is really a drink.
The average person should drink 8 glasses of water each day (each glass holds 8 fl oz). If you are overweight, you need an additional glass for each 25 pounds of excess weight you are carrying.
Before you reach for the coffee percolator, we are talking here about water. You need to drink water with nothing added. Tea and coffee are diuretics and actually rob your body of water. Indeed, some experts say that for every cup of coffee you drink you need an extra glass of water!
So what does water do that makes it so important?
- It suppresses the appetite and helps the body to use up stored fat. Insufficient water can cause fat deposits to increase as the kidneys will not function properly; passing some of their duties to the liver which cannot then metabolize stored fat into energy.
- If the body is getting insufficient water it will store as much of it as possible as a defense mechanism. Retained water shows up as excess weight. If you have a water retention problem, drink more water! It sounds crazy at first, but once the body is trained to expect sufficient water it will store far less, leading to a loss of weight.
- Water helps muscle stimulation and digestion.
- Constipation is a symptom of dehydration. Increased water intake will usually eliminate the problem.
- The kidneys remove wastes such as urea, uric acid and lactic acid, all of which must be dissolved in water. Insufficient water can lead to kidney damage.
- Insufficient water can lead to migraine-type headaches.
- A study by the University of Washington found that one glass of water before bed prevented night-time hunger pangs in nearly 100% of the participants in the study.
- The risk of colon cancer, cancer of the bladder, and breast cancer are sharply reduced by drinking the recommended amount of water.
